Yea just any client (either legit or hacked)

I myself made one, though it's somewhat unconventional. It's called chipmunkmod and it aims for kaboom.pw and similar servers where everyone is an operator; its source code can be found here.
I mostly abandoned it, but its codebase lives on in forks, most significantly this one.

As for launchers I have memories of using the official launchers (I can recall three of them, the first of which being useful for running the game on Vista/XP), Team Extreme Launcher, TLauncher (the evil one), TL Legacy (also good compatibility-wise), MultiMC(?), UltimMC(?), PolyMC, Prism Launcher, PollyMC, Fjord Launcher.
I think the oldest official launcher as well as TL Legacy were written in Java? Too lazy to check to be honest.

As far as clients go… I've mainly used vanilla and Fabric w/ some performance mods. Once in 2020-2021 I tried Impact for the hell of it.
On free-op servers I've also used my own mod, chipmunkmod, chayapak's fork of it, and E11eman's CrackUtilities. Not really a client, but I've also written a proxy to serve a similar purpose previously, and used RealDinhero21's proxies too.
